I’ve been a healthy living, healthy aging enthusiast since way before it was cool to be one. And if you’ve landed on my little slice of the internet, my guess is that you’ve already been thinking about how you live and age, and what you might be able to do to improve your life experience.
So, how did healthy living become a thing for me? Well, in my early to mid 20’s I worked 60+ hours a week at a very stressful job in New Jersey just trying to make ends meet…pretty familiar story, right?!?! I’m pretty sure I lived on chicken fingers and mozzarella sticks for a few years…nutritious wasn’t a prerequisite. I stayed up late and got up early the next day to do it all over again. I was burning the candle at both ends and I wasn’t managing my stress or the effects of it well at all. I was stuck in a cycle of feeling “fine” one week and awful the next. I was living a life that was not sustainable. By my mid 20’s I realized I couldn’t keep going like I was. So, at the end of a particularly tough day, I made a decision. I decided to change my life. I wanted to feel good…to live better…to love the life I was living. And so it began, I started making small sustainable changes to my lifestyle.
I took my first yoga class, fell in love with it, learned how to cope with stress in healthier ways, and started to feel REALLY great!
The truth is that yoga was the catalyst that changed my life. Yoga practice led to better sleep, which led to clearer thinking and mindfulness, which led to healthier food choices, which led to wanting to know more about ALL things healthy living. The healthy aging piece of my life came a couple of years later after an evening out with a group of couples that were quite a bit older than I was…just try to imagine this!
There I was, my 30 year old self sitting in a restaurant with 9 other people, 4 women and 5 men. I’m seated between 2 beautiful women that I had become close friends with. It just so happens that I am sitting between one woman that is just entering menopause and one that is coming out on the other side of it. They were sharing, in vivid detail, what I can only describe as menopause symptom horror stories! And there I was…listening to every detail, mouth open, eyes bulging, and the combined feelings of fear and dread taking over. ? After a few minutes, I politely asked another friend to switch seats with me as the picture that was being painted for me seemed pretty bleak and frankly quite scary!
However, it turns out that it’s not. What that evening actually provided me with was a desire to be a willing participant in my own aging process…and so it began for me at 30 years old.
Fast forward 20+ years (yeah, I’m 52 years old now ?) and I’ve been able to turn my passion for healthy living and healthy aging into what I do.
I’m the founder and owner of OmBodies Yoga & Functional Wellness, have been teaching yoga for nearly 20 years, training yoga teachers for 12+ years, completed my Functional Nutrition Guide Training and am currently working to complete my thesis for my 1000-hour Yoga Medicine Certification.
I’ve spent the majority of my adult life studying and teaching a wide array of healthy living and healthy aging topics.
In fact, one of my all-time favorite classes to teach is Strong Bones. Healthy Aging. which I’ve been teaching regularly for the last 5 years.
I know there’s a lot of conflicting information out there about how to live well, how to age well. I’m here to help make sense of it. I’m here to help you feel better if not AWESOME about aging!
You see, we don’t need to be afraid of aging. Aging is a privilege. The truth is that it doesn’t matter what stage of life you’re in, it’s never too early or too late to shift the way you think about healthy living and aging! To take small actionable, sustainable steps in your life to ensure you live your best life and age well doing it! ?
